Lester Holt is a San Francisco native who got his start in broadcasting at a young age. He got an internship with a Sacramento radio station when he was only a teenager and it didn’t take him long to land a gig at a country music radio station where he eventually got the chance to deliver the daily news.

He got his first TV broadcasting job in 1986 when he was hired on at a Chicago CBS affiliate. For 14 years he delivered the nightly news. In 2000, he was hired at MSNBC and quickly developed a reputation of being one of the finest anchors on the fledgling station.
Today he can be seen on NBC Nightly News where he is the first African American person to solo anchor a major network nightly newscast. He’s been at that post since 2015 when he took over for Brian Williams after he was demoted. He also is an anchor for Dateline NBC since 2011.
In 2016, Holt moderated the presidential debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald J. Trump. In 2019, he received the Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Journalism.
