After those films, he struggled to find anything substantial for some years. His next big hit came in 1981 when he starred in Thief. But after that hit and series of flops, he temporarily retired from Hollywood.

He made a comeback of sorts in the late 80s when he returned to film after going completely broke. His next major hit would be 1990’s Misery, 1991s For the Boys, and 1996s Eraser.

In more recent years he has voice acted in both of the Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs films and has tried his hand at a number of television series.

James Caan’s career has had more ups and downs than most rollercoasters. It seems as if he has never been able to find his footing at the top. He very well could have been a superstar but something always got in the way of him finding the success that he desired.
