The new phenomenon known as "Cancel Culture" has gained a cult-like following in the past few years. Digging through celebrities’ old Tweets and other social media posts to reveal "problematic" statements leads to countless fans "canceling" them. It’s becoming increasingly common to call-out celebrities, social media influencers, and other creators in the public limelight for things they said or did years ago. This is often incredibly detrimental to the person’s career and reputation, both online and in professional circles.
The concept of cancel culture isn’t easy to discuss, because it has both negative and positive aspects. On one hand, it’s important to hold celebrities accountable for their actions. All too often celebrities use their power and influence to get away with things that most normal people would get ostracized for. However, we have to ask ourselves, is it really constructive to cancel a person for something they said ten years ago? Asking for an apology is one thing, but claiming that a person is horrible and irredeemable for something they did a long time ago simply doesn’t make sense.
Part of being a human is that we are supposed to grow and change. We all look back on things we said a long time ago with varying degrees of shame and embarrassment, so why can’t we extend that same courtesy to celebrities? Instead of focusing our energy on things people did years ago, we should be working to hold celebrities accountable for things they are doing right now
