Warning – Fans Hate the Walker Texas Ranger Reboot

The original Walker, Texas Ranger premiered in 1993, and became a giant hit with television audiences. The program starred film star Chuck Norris as a member of the Texas Ranger Division and was centered around showcasing the actor’s karate skills every week as he took down the bad guys. The show was incredibly successful, spawning eight seasons and a TV movie. Understandably, the enormous success of the show allowed it to continue to have a long life after it came to an end. Walker, Texas Ranger lived on in the hearts of it’s fans, and was popular in reruns. Eventually, a reboot was considered for the CW network, starring Jared Padalecki from the hit show Supernatural. However, it now appears that the change in cultural climate since the days of the original series has required some changes to be made to that show’s successful formula, and fans aren’t happy.

Jared Padalecki hasn’t tried to hide the fact that this new reboot has been aiming to change a few things from it’s parent show. For one thing, the new reboot has completely eliminated the original program’s trademark karate action. In fact, it doesn’t appear that this new iteration of the iconic character has any knowledge of karate whatsoever. This change was made as a way to help alleviate some of the original show’s violence. Whereas Walker, Texas Ranger portrayed it’s title character as someone who punched first and asked questions later, this new reboot shows the character as someone who wants to find the truth before he acts. While this new change is understandable, it’s also understandable that fans are being rubbed the wrong way.

The original Walker, Texas Ranger existed in a moralistic world where characters could relate to the title character’s violent actions because they felt he was right. However, recent incidents in which cops have overstepped their boundaries when dealing with the public have cast this type of behavior in a much different light to the current audience. That doesn’t change the fact that this type of behavior is what fans expect when they hear the name Walker, Texas Ranger. Since the character always had the moral high ground, audiences felt justified in feeling good when Cordell Walker used his karate to take down the bad guys.

Fans are having a negative reaction to the new reboot, which has simply been titled Walker. Many are continuing to watch in hopes that the new show will find it’s own way, while many others have simply abandoned ship and moved onto watching reruns of the original program. Jared Padalecki has gone on record as saying that he has no intention of ever starring in a reboot that is faithful to the original, which makes the prospect of the producers listening to fan feedback unlikely.
