The Smurfs are the brainchild of Peyo, the esteemed Belgian artists. It started off as a comic book series back in the ’50s but expanded into every form of media. There is of course the Smurf cartoons, films, toys, lunchboxes, snack foods, and anything else you can slap one of these spritely blue figures on to make a buck.

On the surface, Smurfs are pretty adorable creatures that are reminiscent of human-kind, but if you dig a bit deeper, there are some major questions about their genetics, taxonomy, and morphology that beg to be answered.
