Covid19’s days are almost done. With vaccines being administered left and right, it’s only just a matter
of time before everything gets back to normal. I guess now is the best time to get to know the virus that
put the world on lockdown a little bit more. Not only that, why don’t we get to know more about some
of the deadly viruses floating around out there?
This isn’t to scare you of course, but rather a testament to the human spirit. Our ability to continue living
while being surrounded by a multitude of dangers, invisible or otherwise. The virus on number one has
been around for decades but it hasn’t put us on our knees. In fact, we’ve probably already found a cure.

Number 10. The Marburg Virus
Scientists identified Marburg virus in 1967, when small outbreaks occurred among lab workers in
Germany who were exposed to infected monkeys imported from Uganda. Marburg virus is similar to
Ebola in that both can cause hemorrhagic fever, meaning that infected people develop high fevers and
bleeding throughout the body that can lead to shock, organ failure and death.
It’s unknown how the virus was first transmitted from its animal host to humans, however, in two cases
where 2 tourists visiting Uganda, it was discovered that they acquired the virus through unprotected
contact with bat feces.
The mortality rate in the first outbreak was 25%, but it was more than 80% in the 1998-2000 outbreak in
the Democratic Republic of Congo, as well as in the 2005 outbreak in Angola, according to the World
Health Organization.
To this day, there is no specific treatment for the Marburg hemorrhagic fever. However, it has been
treated successfully using supportive hospital therapy which includes balancing the patient’s fluids and
electrolytes, maintaining oxygen status and blood pressure, replacing lost blood and clotting factors, and
treatment for any complicating infections.

Number 9. The Ebola Virus
The Ebola Virus is one of four deadly viruses that can cause the dreaded Ebola Virus Disease, an
extremely fatal viral disease that causes hemorrhagic fever in its victims. The virus was first discovered
in 1976 near the Ebola River in what is now the Democratic Republic of Congo. Since then, the virus has
been infecting people from time to time, leading to outbreaks in several African countries.
Scientists do not know where Ebola virus comes from. However, based on the nature of similar viruses,
they believe the virus is animal-borne, with bats or nonhuman primates such as chimpanzees, apes,
monkeys, etc. being the most likely source. Infected animals carrying the virus can transmit it to other
animals, like apes, monkeys, duikers and of course, humans.
Aside from a high fever and hemorrhaging from different parts of the body, other symptoms includes
pain on different parts of the body, weakness and fatigue, diarrhea, and vomiting.

Number 8. Rabies
Rabies is a fatal but preventable viral disease. It can spread to people and pets if they are bitten or
scratched by a rabid animal. In the United States, rabies is mostly found in wild animals like bats,
raccoons, skunks, and foxes. However, in many other countries dogs still carry rabies, and most rabies
deaths in people around the world are caused by dog bites.
The rabies virus infects the central nervous system. If a person does not receive the appropriate medical
care after a potential rabies exposure, the virus can cause disease in the brain, ultimately resulting in
death. Have you seen a person suffering from rabies? Don’t look it up because I promise you, the images
will haunt you for a long time.
People with rabies will initially feel flu like symptoms. However, as the virus spreads, people will
experience agitation and anxiety, hyperactivity, and excessive salivation, giving victims an appearance of
foaming at the mouth. Later on, victims will fall victim to hallucinations, experience partial paralysis, and
finally, death.

Number 7. Dengue
Dengue virus first appeared in the 1950s in the Philippines and Thailand, where it’s still prevalent to this
day, and has since spread throughout the tropical and subtropical regions of the globe. Up to 40% of the
world's population now lives in areas where dengue is endemic, and the disease — with the mosquitoes
that carry it — is likely to spread farther as the world warms.
