People seem to be obsessed with the apocalypse. There is no shortage of movies about the end-of-days. In 1998, there was a particularly popular version of the old familiar theme going around. The films Armageddon and Deep Impact both came out in the same year and followed very similar plot lines. Basically, a giant asteroid is coming to Earth. We were unprepared for its arrival and when it gets here it’s almost too late for anything to be done. If it makes an impact, then all of life as we know it will be obliterated.
Both films depict space agencies like NASA coming together with other top minds to devise a plan of attack that has the slim chance of saving humanity from certain doom. Spoiler alert: they are successful and humans make it through the ordeal virtually unscathed.
