Honestly, celebrating both holidays has its perks. First of all, it’s not like you have to choose one or the other. This year Hanukkah is celebrated from December 10th to December 18th giving any festive dual-celebrator plenty of time to make Christmas plans after the final candle of the Menorah has been lit.
Both Holidays present excellent excuses for families to get together, share a meal, enjoy each other’s company, and celebrate what it means to be alive. For families that have members with different cultural heritages, the holiday season is the perfect opportunity for Christians to learn about Judaism and visa-versa.
Coming from different paths shouldn’t be divisive. By respectfully learning about the traditions and values of someone from another religion, not only does one gain a fuller understanding of how others experience the world, but they also get the chance to enjoy unique life-enriching traditions.
