The Wall of Kindness

Walls have always been built to divide and segregate people but did you know that there is a wall that can bring people together as well? Well, the wall of kindness not only brings people together but also helps those in need!

The idea behind the wall of kindness is simple

and the two-liner motto describes it perfectly, “take if you need” and “leave if you don’t!” You simply leave clothing articles that you do not need for those who require them. It is simply a clean wall in a public place to which hooks are attached. People who wish to donate clothing items can leave them hanging there so anyone can take them.

The idea of the wall of kindness was originated in Iran to help the homeless people of Mashhad in surviving the cold winter weather. With the sanctions imposed by the western world in 2015, the crippling economy of Iran drove a number of people below the poverty line. With the increase in inflation and unemployment rates, many Iranians were unable to afford clothes. That’s when the walls of kindness emerged throughout the country.

The movement eventually gained media attention and went viral on the social and mass media platforms. It was highly appreciated throughout the world! The chance taken by young Iranians to strengthen the bonds of community highly paid off.

Soon a number of walls of kindness sprung in countries all around the globe including Jordan, India and China. Some hotels took the wall of kindness a step further by offering their walls for the cause. They would then collect the clothes left by people for the poor and homeless, wash and iron them, before hanging them back on the wall. They make sure that whenever someone takes an item of clothing from the wall of kindness, it is clean and as good as new!

The same idea is practiced with food. Instead of hooks, refrigerators are installed on the streets. People are encouraged to leave drinks and good food in these refrigerators instead of throwing it away. It is available for anyone who wishes to have it! With the combined efforts of individuals, hotels and restaurants, tons of food can be placed in these refrigerators every day; no one shall go to sleep hungry again.

What started as a little project to help the people of Mashhad survive a winter is now helping thousands of people all around the world. The inspiring story of the anonymous Iranian youngsters perfectly depicts that a simple act of kindness combined with an innovative idea can go a long way!
