There’s a very good chance that if you flip on a spooky movie, it’ll start with some unsuspecting individuals holding up their trusty camcorder gleefully recording their friends and family before all hell breaks loose in some unforeseen and unfortunate way.

But if you take a little trip back in time to 1999, you’ll find the film that paved the way for the entire genre, The Blair Witch Project. When it came out, it completely changed the way that audiences looked at horror movies

Even though critics were less than enthusiastic about the film when it first premiered, it went on to develop a bit of a cult following and is widely remembered as not only being a classic but also as the origin of the found-footage phenomenon that we see in modern films.

Being as iconic of a flick as it was, everybody took a stab at spoofing it. Notably, Scary Movie made a memorable attempt at making light of the ghastly film as well as the much later example in The Office when Michael Scott produced the training video that he called ‘The Scranton Witch Project’ where he whispered the importance of labeling food items in the break room refrigerator.

Eventually, this trend of lampooning The Blair Witch Project reached an altogether unexpected realm – that being children’s cartoons.

You might not think of Scooby-Doo as being particularly horrifying. At worst, it’s a mildly spooky affair that follows Scooby and the Gang’s repeated forays into uncovering the devious exploits of rather inept and bungling masked criminals and their botched attempts at committing virtually innocuous offenses.

However in 1999, just in time for Halloween, Cartoon Network aired an episode of the Hanna-Barbera series that would stir up a bit of controversy and would lead to the episode never being aired again.

Scooby-Doo is one of the most beloved cartoon franchises in animated television history. Did you know that there was an episode that aired only once and then seemingly vanished? Sure, you can find a rip on YouTube or similar streaming sites, but a re-issue or re-air has never come to fruition for the special called The Scooby-Doo Project.

The special is an insanely well-executed spoof of The Blair Witch Project featuring Scooby and the gang. It featured a truly unique animation style that superimposed the animated cast over a live-action background in the same style as found-footage style horror films like The Blair Project.

This video is going to investigate why the special was never aired again after its initial airing. It was met with critical acclaim and even one a coveted Annie Award for outstanding achievement in a special animated project. Viewers also expressed massive approval for the special. To this day, there are fans of the episode that are waiting for an official re-release.

That day may never come. It’s theorized that the true reason why the special has never been mentioned again is that it was much too scary for its young targeted audience. Perhaps there were issues with obtaining the distribution rights but the former explanation is far more likely.
