Punky Brewster might not have been one of the complex TV series but it was one of the most popular sitcoms aimed at adolescents and children in the mid-80s. It even inspired its own animated spin-off series called It’s Punky Brewster! Despite the fact that the show was upbeat and colorful, the kid-friendly program wasn’t exactly as light and innocent as it seemed on the surface.

The NBC situational comedy starred Soleil Moon Frye as Penelope Brewster, AKA Punky, a spunky school-aged kid abandoned by her mother at a shopping mall to fend for herself. If that’s not a dark premise, then we don’t know what it! Well, It’s discovered that she is squatting in an apartment building by a kindly yet cantankerous photographer named Henry, portrayed by George Gaynes, who takes her in and gives her refuge. As the show progresses, he becomes less and less curmudgeonly all thanks to Punky’s unrelenting bubbly magnetism. Who really could be immune to that?
With a dash of her signature "Punky Power" and her best friend Cherie by her side – along with her dog Brandon – Brewster uses her charismatic charm to overcome the challenges that come her way as she navigates through the pits and perils of growing up.
NBC recently announced that they are reviving the series on it’s Peacock Streaming platform. Although it was originally intended for the show to premiere in 2020, it seems that it has been pushed back in 2021.
