But, did you know that psychologists think that we have at least 9 verifiable senses? Some estimate that we may have as high as 53 senses?

It seems odd that in the modern world that we live in, we aren’t able to say with certainty how many senses we have. Of course, there are the 5 major ones that everyone is familiar with, sight,, smell, taste, hearing, and touch but there are so many for sensations that we experience that can’t be defined as one of these.

For example, there are spatial sensations, the perception of movement, gravity, pain, and temperature, and some people even break up the 5 classical senses into many different subcategories. Who’s to say that the taste of something sweet isn’t a different sense that tasting something sour?

This video is going to take a look at some of the extra senses that have been identified or hypothesized. We are also going to look back on the history of defining the senses and see what that knowledge means for our perception of the senses today.

We are going to also touch on the subject of synesthesia and how that complicates things not only for the experiencer of the phenomenon but also for researchers that are trying to understand how many senses we have and how they physiologically and psychologically affect our body and mind.
