Saved By The Bell was unique because it touched upon serious social issues through the lens of its high school aged cast. It helped set the stage for later teen dramas like The OC, One Tree Hill, and Dawson’s creek.

The series was actually a retooling of any early series called Good Morning, Miss Bliss that aired on the Disney Channel. The original series only lasted a season but the subsequent show that it inspired managed to find the right balance of plot and character development. After premiering on August 20, 1989, to strong ratings, Saved By The Bell became one of the most popular programs directed towards the teen and young adult market.

As it’s uplifting theme music suggested, the show focused on the lighthearted and humorous feats and exploits of a ragtag crew of teenage friends. Zack, Kelly, Slater, Jessie, Lisa, and Screech subsequently became household names. And you can’t talk about Saved By The Bell without bringing up their High School principal Mr. Belding.
