In 1790, after President George Washington signed an act of Congress and chose, along with city planner Pierre L’Enfant, 1600 Pennsylvania Anevue as the site of the President’s House, he began inviting proposal for its design. The design that ultimately won was a plan submitted by James Hoban, an Irish-born architect. Construction began in 1792 and though President Washington chose the site and overlooked the construction, he never really lived in the White House. The first President to live in the White House is John Adams and his wife Abigail Adams.

Over the years, the White House has undergone massive changes. Almost every President and First Lady who has moved into the building has made renovations to it. For instance, during President Chester Arthur’s era, the President took it upon himself to give the entire place a Victorian flair. Then, when Franklin Roosevelt came, he added an East Wing that was basically added to hide the Presidential Emergency Operations Center. Between 1948 and 1952, the Truman administration commissioned a massive renovation of the White House and the President and the First Lady lived in the Blair House during that time. During the era of John F. Kennedy, Jacqueline Kennedy filled 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue with historic art. More recently, the former First Lady of America, Michelle Obama also undertook several renovation projects.

The White House, with its beautiful Oval Office and exquisite Rose Garden, is a structure of national importance and an integral part of American history. Many see the building that has been home to so many U.S. presidents as one of the most beautiful museums in the country.
