Mac Davis Left Behind Millions & A Musical Legacy

Mac Davis was a country music star and songwriter for the greats that saw his career come to a commercial peak in the mid-1970s. He was one of the world’s most popular performers back in his day. He was born in Lubbock, Texas on January 21, 1942, to a lower-income family. His father was a religious zealot and his mother left to go make a life for herself in Atlanta, Georgia.

After Davis graduated from Lubbock High School at the age of 16, he moved to Atlanta to go live with his mother. He soon found himself with a promising career in the music industry as a regional manager for the Chicago based label Vee Jay.

He joined Liberty records a few years later and made the move to LA, where he began writing songs for Kenny Rogers, Bobby Goldsboro, and Elvis Presley.

It was working with the latter legend that earned his work a spot on the Top 40 charts with the Presley song ‘Memories’. Following several more chart-topping writing credits, he began recording his own solo material which was also met with commercial success and critical acclaim.

‘Baby. Don’t Get Hooked on Me’, released in 1972 was his only number one hit and it also reached the top 20 on the country charts. He continued a career in country music before finding his way onto the television screen where he managed to land his own show The Mac Davis Show before making the jump to the big screen where he starred in almost two dozen films.

In recent years he has been a frequent collaborator for big-name acts such as Avicii, Rivers Cuomo, Bruno Mars, and Keith Urban.
