Looney Tunes Has a Hidden Racist Past

Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies are classic cartoon series that brought us beloved characters like Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Elmer Fudd, Porky Pig, and many more. You probably grew up with these characters. Maybe you had a lunch box or a trapper keeper back in your school days featuring these all-too-familiar characters. They launched a huge franchise surrounding the pantheon of characters that came out of these cartoon series, but chances are, you are unfamiliar with their startling history of racism and bigotry.

Looney Tunes came out of the 1930s – an era that was saturated int racism and civil rights weren’t even really being discussed in seriousness at the time. The world was still very much so segregated and the wounds and pains of slavery were still making waves in society. Healing was crucially needed but the media, films, books, and movies only insisted upon reaffirming racial stereotypes, cliches, and outmoded ideas that only served to further ingrain these negative sentiments.

Look no further than Looney Tunes to see some shocking examples of racial inequality and prejudice that were widely accepted at the time – so much so that they were even recurring themes in cartoons aimed at children. Follow us on our journey through the early years of animation and how there were many dark secrets hidden in the past of some of your favorite characters.

Sure Warner Brothers have essentially censored all of these examples over the years and have disavowed their messages, but they still stand as a testament and a reminder of just how far we have all come since those troubling years and just how much more we should be trying to move forward to wash away the pain that was inflicted upon people historically because of the color of their skin.

Join us for this expose of what Warner Brothers doesn’t want you to see. You’ll be shocked to find that even Bugs Bunny got in on the racism and antagonized an African-American character just for being a person of color. May this be a reminder of what mistakes were made in the past what we never want to repeat again.
