John Gavin Malkovich was born on December 9, 1953, to Joe Anne and Daniel Leon Malkovich. In 1976, he joined Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre. Though he remained active with the group, it took him seven years to move to New York and play a role in Sam Shepard’s True West.

In 1984, he worked alongside Dustin Hoffman in the Broadway revival of Death of a Salesman. The same year, he made his big-screen debut with Places in the Heart, which won him an Academy nomination in the Best Supporting Actor category. In 1988, he played Vicomte de Valmont in Dangerous Liaisons, which played a key role in solidifying his standing within the industry. In 1993 came In the Line of Fire in which Malkovich played a psychotic assassin. The role won him Academy as well as Golden Globe nominations.
