Inside the World’s Most Luxurious Prisons

Some of them are called prisons, some others are called “correctional facilities,” but the one thing these places have in common is the fact that they’re meant to keep people in a state of confinement for a specific amount of time, or sometimes…for a lifetime. But different prisons have different facilities. Most of the time the state of the prison depends on the country where it’s at and the people who take care of it. But sometimes prisons are in such a great condition that it makes you wonder if the people feel like they’re captive at all! In today’s video, we’ll have a look inside the “World’s Most Luxurious Prisons.” That’s right. I said “luxurious” because not every prison in the world is as tedious and boring as you might think. Some of them are luxurious simply because of the inmates in them, and others…well, I guess something got out of control and allowed them to become the prisons they are today. Let’s check them out.

Pondok Bambu Prison

Indonesia is the fourth largest country in the world. It’s full of warm and welcoming people spread all over its thousands of islands. But in the midst of all of those nice people, there’ve been some who did some things that aren’t right and today they’re in prison. But there’s one prison for women in Jakarta, which is the country’s capital, where the women can participate in classes and even karaoke nights. If they’re well behaved, they can even get their nails done at the prison’s salon. Some people say that if you have enough money, you can purchase a luxurious room here. And if you don’t, you can still try to bribe your way into this type of room.

Yankton Federal Prison Camp

This place in South Dakota actually looks and feels like a camp. This space used to be a college campus, so you can expect to find a lot of airy spaces with big windows that make the perfect spot for tons of educational and empowering activities. What used to be the college dorm rooms is now a library and those who do well can even opt to go out and volunteer in off-campus activities such as Habitat for Humanity. Overall, it looks like going to this place is like going to a regular college – the only difference is that the people who go to this camp can never leave until the authorities decide to let them out.

Qincheng Prison

I’m not sure what’s your idea of a prison, but I’m sure that you never expected to see one like Qincheng Prison in China. This place is filled with fish ponds and orchids, which makes it a great spot to relax and meditate. I guess the high-ranking government officials who are the majority of the inmates in this place can use their time to think of the things they did wrong and have a change of heart. But I wonder how bad they feel about the things they did. They are treated like royalty, eating fresh fruit and enjoying their HDTV and the misty hills outside the prison grounds. Prison? It doesn’t sound like it! But I guess you can call it that since they are not allowed to go out.

Suomenlinna Prison

Considering that Finland is ranked as the number one happiest country in the world, it doesn’t surprise me that one of their thirteen prisons is actually an “open prison” in which inmates even get a key to their own room and they’re allowed to work part-time, do grocery shopping and socialize as they wish. This open prison concept started in the last century as a “rehab colony” but today it is an open facility where prisoners can participate in different activities under supervision. Suomenlinna is meant to be their last stop before they go back to their regular lives. They just gotta make sure they stay and do all of their activities within the prison grounds. If they fail to do so, they could go back to the actual prison and that wouldn’t be fun at all.

San Pedro Prison

It’s hard to believe this can be considered a luxurious prison, but San Pedro Prison in Bolivia is actually quite special compared to others in the region. This place is set up as a thriving community, with appointed leaders and even neighborhoods and families are allowed to coexist in this place. There are about 3,000 inmates and all of them are allowed to work, and rent or buy their accommodation within the prison grounds. If that wasn’t enough, there’s even a hotel inside the prison for any relative that wants to visit or any curious guest who’s intrigued by what goes on inside this uncommon place.
