Anyone who listens to popular music has likely heard the name "Billie Eilish". The 19-year-old singer has seen a meteoric rise to fame since her first internet upload at the age of 15. However, with that rise to fame has come a tough battle for the singer. That battle is the age-old battle of self-image.
Despite showcasing immense musical talent from an early age, Billie was never the most confident child. Her artistic parents encouraged her to follow her musical ambitions. Being that they were both actors themselves, they understood the importance of doing what you love in life. Because of this, Billie pursued a career in music, working alongside her brother and producer Finnegan. After her first upload, her fame started rising at an incredible speed. She was signed to a subsidiary of Interscope Records, and released an EP in 2017 that saw a good deal of commercial and critical success.
By the time Billie’s full-length studio debut dropped in 2019, few were surprised regarding it’s massive success. The album, titled When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?, was produced entirely by her brother. Having already found a high level of viral success, Billie’s new album seemed destined to become a massive hit with mainstream audiences. It performed incredibly well, charting near the top in most countries. As well, it’s lead single, "Bad Guy" became one of the biggest songs of it’s year. When the Grammy Awards came around, Billie was nominated in several categories.
Billie’s Grammy nominations weren’t a surprise, but her wins were. The night of the awards show, Billie became the youngest recording artist to win the award for Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best New Artist in the same night. As well, she became only the second artist ever to do so in history. It appeared that the young star was on top of the world. However, underneath her signature baggy clothes were some hidden insecurities that were soon going to become known to the public.
As it turns out, Billie has never been quite as comfortable with her body as her calm and cool demeanor might make it seem. For anyone who has ever known a 19-year-old, this should come as no surprise. All young people suffer from some amount of insecurity in regards to their public appearance. However, not every 19-year-old is one of the most popular musical artists in the world.
Billie had always been known for wearing baggy clothing, but everyone always assumed it was just the teen’s preferred style. A recent short film that Billie released has called the intentions behind Billie’s style choice into question. It now appears that Billie’s insistence on wearing baggy clothes has had more to do with her negative self-image than with any particular fashion choice on her part. Recently, an image of Billie caught candidly wearing a tank-top was leaked to the public. This was perhaps that first time that fans had been able to see the singer in tight clothing, and it revealed a good deal of her form. Internet trolls began body-shaming the young singer, and the event spiraled into a full-blown philosophical argument about body positivity.
