Jett was born just 5 days after her father died on January 1, 1953. She was legally adopted by her paternal grandmother Lillie Stone and her name was changed to Catherine Yvonne Stone. Her grandmother died in 1955 and she was made a ward of the state of Alabama and was adopted by the Deupree family shortly thereafter.

Jett didn’t learn who her biological parents were until the early 1980s. It was then that she learned that her father was the country legend Hank Williams and that he had signed a custody agreement before she was born that would have given him full custody of her two years after she was born.

If she wanted to prove that she was Hank’s daughter, she would have to go to extreme lengths to prove her relationship. She went to court several times with no luck. In 1984, she met an investigative attorney named Keith Adkinson that was able to find a signed physical copy of the custody contract.

In 1985, the Alabama State Court ruled conclusively that she was indeed the daughter of Hank Williams. In 1987 the Alabama Supreme court ruled that she was indeed entitled to her share of Hank Williams estate. Hank Williams Jr. attempted to appeal the court but the ruling was upheld when the US Supreme Court refused to hear the case in 1990.

Jett Williams wrote an autobiography in 1990 titled Ain’t Nothin’ As Sweet As My Baby. She has also released four albums consisting of both original material and covers of her father’s songs.
