Barbra Streisand has the distinction of being the highest-selling female recording artist of all time, and she is also among those few artists who have managed to conquer all mediums, including theatre, television, and film.

Barbra was born in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, to Emanuel Streisand, a high-school teacher, and Diana Rosen, a homemaker, on April 24, 1942. When Barbra was only 15-months-old, her father died of an epileptic seizure. Thereafter, Barbra’s mother took a job working as a secretary in the city’s school system. Barbra and her brother, Sheldon, grew up in abject poverty and the family often depended on Diana’s parents for financial support. When Barbra was 7-years-old, Diana remarried. Unfortunately, Barbra’s stepfather was emotionally abusive, which added to her childhood woes. Further, Barbra’s plain looks made her shy and under-confident, emotions exaggerated by her mother who reiterated often that her daughter was too plain-looking to pursue a career in the entertainment world, which was Barbara’s dream since the very start.
In any case, immediately after graduating from high-school, Barbra shifted to Manhattan, primarily to be away from her family. In the city, she balanced her time between office jobs and acting lessons. One particular evening saw her participating in a talent night at a local club even though she had never taken formal training in singing. The evening was a major success and before it even ended, it fetched Barbra a contract as a cabaret singer. Before she knew it, Barbra had developed a loyal following and she began regularly performing at famous local Manhattan clubs.
In 1962, Barbra debuted on Broadway with I Can Get it For You Wholesale, for which she received a Tony nomination and a New York Drama Critics award. She also recorded her first album for the show, which won her a contract with Columbia Records, the result of which was The Barbra Streisand Album, which came out in 1963. The album was a top-10 gold record and won two Grammys. After creating a successful career in the music industry, Barbra moved her attention to television. In 1965, she starred in My Name is Barbra, which won five Emmy awards and also fetched the singer a 10-year contract with CBS. During the late 1960s, Barbra continued to build on her career as a singer and TV actor. However, with the approach of the new decade, she moved her attention to the big screen, starring in one film after another. She also created her own production company, Barwood Films, during the 70s.
Over the years, Barbra has given audiences several platinum-selling albums. She has sold over 250 million records worldwide and is one of the top-selling recording artists of all time, ahead of even The Beatles. Barbra Streisand is also the only artist to have won every single major award, including Emmy, Golden Globe, Tony, Academy, and the Peabody.
