15 Unhealthiest Chinese Foods
Every country around the world has at least one dish that is important to their culture. And when many of their dishes become so popular, they begin to be served around different parts of the world. This is exactly what happened with Chinese food. As people started traveling around the world, Chinese food gained a lot of attention, and today, you can find all sorts of Chinese food dishes in different parts of the world. Sadly, fast food chains and many modern restaurants do not stick to the original recipes. And even some of the most authentic Chinese dishes are not good for our health if we eat them in big portions. In today’s video, we’ll be looking at “15 of the Most Unhealthy Chinese Foods.” You’ll find out why eating some of these dishes can be bad for your health, even if you love them so much. You might be surprised that some of your favorite picks are mentioned in this video, but I’m sure nothing I say today will stop you from eating them. Especially the one at the top of the list, which is a favorite among many.
Lo Mein
Who doesn’t love a good dish of noodles? And what can be so bad about them? Well…when it comes to Lo Mein, they use a lot of oil for it. And you might think that asking for one with veggies and no meat might be a healthier choice, but I’m afraid to tell you that’s not true. Even the light version of Lo Mein still has a lot of oil. And with lots of oil comes lots of calories and fat. And if you ask for meat, the Lo Mein might be tastier but also less healthy. If you really like Lo Mein, then you should try making your own noodles at home. Then you can choose how much oil you want to use.
Mapo Tofu
Alright, but Tofu is a healthier option, right? We’ve said that a lot in many of our videos. Yes and…no. The thing with Mapo Tofu is that it’s usually cooked with pork or beef, which adds a lot of fat to a dish that could otherwise be healthier. Sure, this version of tofu is very tasty, but it has so much sodium and fat that could be bad for you in the long run. And I know there are many people who claim that eating too much tofu can be good for your health, but things might be a bit different for those who are allergic to soy. If you’re not allergic…you should definitely have Mapo Tofu every once in a while. But maybe don’t make it a habit, your body needs more than just soy and pork meat.
Lemon Chicken
One of the things that make Chinese food so appealing in America and other parts of the world is that you can get a lot of food for a very cheap price. And since people in these countries like to eat a lot, they sometimes get big portions without being aware of all the calories that they put in their bodies. When it comes to Lemon Chicken, the dish is packed with 600 calories per one-cup serving. And normally, people get more than just one cup and their average portion ends up having around 1400 calories, which is a few hundred calories away from the recommended daily intake. Imagine taking all of that in one go? It’s too much, but I get it…lemon chicken tastes so good!
Pan-fried Dumplings
You might be surprised by this since dumplings are so small and seemingly harmless. But pan-fried dumplings are on this list because of their filling, which is usually pork. Like I said before, pork adds a lot of fat and calories to the dish. Each dumpling can easily be worth 100 calories and I’m sure you will have more than just one of them. You might feel a bit better if you order steamed dumplings instead of the ones that are pan-fried but still, you should watch out for the sodium in each of these appetizers. Having too much sodium can lead to high blood pressure.
Youtiao
If you love donuts, and churros, then, of course, you love youtiao. The one thing that they all have in common is that they’re deep-fried bread-based snacks. And the other thing that they all have in common is that they pack a lot of calories in such a small piece of bread. A single stick of youtiao can have as many as 400 calories. On top of that, eating a lot of fried food can cause constipation and that’s not fun!
General Tso’s Dishes
Alright, I get it. This is definitely not a dish that you would easily find in China, but it’s one that you can easily find in many Chinese restaurants in North America. Whether it’s Chicken or Tofu, having it General Tso’s way can be one of the unhealthiest choices for you.
