10 MOST DANGEROUS ATTRACTIONS IN THE WORLD
Amusement park and theme park rides and attractions are meant to be fun and not at all dangerous. Let
me clarify that, these attractions should give you the feeling of being in danger, because it’s more fun
that way. But, there are some attractions that lean more towards danger than fun, especially number
one whose designer is obviously insane. Stay tuned for that as we give you 10 of the most dangerous
attractions of the world.
Number 10. The Big Dipper, Battersea Fun Fair
Big Dipper was a wooden roller coaster located at Battersea Park in London, opened in 1951 and was
one of the Battersea Park Funfair's biggest attractions, that was until a horrible incident that happened
in May 1972.
On the 30 th of May, a train being hoisted up to the start of the ride broke loose from its haulage rope,
and the rollback brake failed, causing the cart to roll backwards towards the station. In spite of the
efforts of the brakeman, the train gathered speed and the back carriage jumped the rails and crashed
through a barrier with the other two carriages crashing on top of it. Unfortunately, 5 children lost their
lives due to the accident, 13 others were also injured.
After the accident The Big Dipper was closed, and dismantled. With the lack of a main attraction at the
funfair its popularity quickly declined. The rest of the fair was closed two years later in 1974. Very little
remains now to even suggest that a funfair once stood on the site.
Number 9. The Waterworld Banzai Pipeline
The danger of this next attraction didn’t come from poor engineering or a structural malfunction.
Believe it or not, it was caused by a bunch of rowdy high schoolers trying to uphold a school graduation
tradition.
What the kids did was called “clogging”. You do this by sliding midway down a waterslide, then gripping
the sides so that you don’t go further down. Then other kids would do the same, stopping right behind
you, essentially creating a human clog midway down the slide. Despite a park guard’s efforts to regulate
the amount of people in line for the slip-and-slide, the large group was able to climb to the top, where
catastrophe struck. The weight of 33 high school kids was simply too much for the structure, and it
collapsed, sending all students crashing down 40 feet to the ground.
Miraculously, there was only one casualty out of this incident, but the rest of the kids were seriously
injured. They were still able to attend graduation, although most of them attended the ceremony on
wheelchairs.
Number 8. The Gatlinburg Mountain Coaster
Gatlinburg is one of those towns that everyone goes to visit, though it's kind of hard to explain why it's
such a tourist hotspot. Nestled in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee, it's a perfect mix of a relaxing
venue with things to do and outdoor excursions.
One of the renowned favorites was going on the Gatlinburg Mountain Coaster. It was a simple track that
seated two riders, one in front and one behind, and zipped them down and around the gorgeous trees
in the mountains. However, the famous coaster was closed in 2016 when, tragically, a girl fell out of her
front seat on the coaster and broke both knee caps, her wrist, and a couple of ribs, while also suffering a
concussion.
While an inspection report from the National Association of Amusement Ride Safety Officials did not
show any mechanical errors on the ride, the Mountain Coaster team did admit an operational issue
occurred where a worker did not follow the standard procedures for buckling lap belts.
Rumors are still being circulated about the ride reopening sometime soon, but who knows if anyone will
ever trust the dangerous and poorly regulated ride again.
Number 7. The Tarzan Swing, Action Park
This will not be the last time you’ll be hearing of Action Park on this list. The attractions in that place
were so dangerous, people actually called the place Class Action Park due to the numerous lawsuits that
it faced while it was in operation. This is just one of those law suit generating attractions.
The Tarzan Swing as one of the most popular rides in the park. Guests would grab a 20-foot cable, and
then swing over a spring-fed pool of water and jump in, theoretically, when the rope reached its height.
Some people held on too long and scraped their feet on the concrete. Others got into the pool, but were
shocked by just how cold the spring-fed body of water they had been completely submerged in was. In
an incident in 1984,
