10 Abnormally Large Animal Discoveries
Every living thing in this world is only meant to grow a particular size, that’s why you don’t see a whale
the size of a dog, or a dog the size of a whale. There are, however, some instances when certain animals
become overachievers in the size department. We are going to talk about some of them today. Make
sure you stay tuned for number one as I’m sure you will find that quite surprising. Here are 10
abnormally large animal discoveries.
Number 10. Big Bill
Big Bill, the name should already tell you everything that you need to know, but if that still isn’t enough
for you, check this guy out. Big Bill held the title of being the world’s largest pig with an shocking weight
of 2,552 pounds. Owned by Elias Buford Butler of Jackson, Tennessee; Big Bill was 5 feet tall, 9 feet long
and though he set the record way back in 1933 – no other pig has been able to beat his record, not even
close.
There were also reports of the Liaoning Provincial Agricultural Museum having appealed to Guinness
World Records to recognize a 1984-pound pig which died in February 2009, aged only 5 years, as the
biggest pig ever. The pig apparently died because of health problems that originated because he was too
big to move – at death, the pig was 2.5 meters long and had a waistline of 2.23 meters! Nothing has
come of that appeal though. That said, Big Bill still rules over as the king of all pigs, and is still recognized
as the biggest pig ever.
Number 9. The Chinese Giant Salamander
Growing to nearly six feet long and weighing roughly 140 pounds, Chinese Giant Salamanders are the
largest amphibians in the world. Their beady, lidless eyes peer out from broad, flat heads with blunt
snouts, and their mud-colored bodies have short limbs and long tails. The species’ slimy skin is not
pleasant to pet, either.
Previously thought to be only one specie, it has been recently discovered that there are actually roughly
half a dozen species of Chinese giant salamander. During this study, scientists fully expected to find
probably two or even three species of the amphibian. After all, finding out that there are actually more
species of an animal that previously thought isn’t that rare, like in the case of the Mata Mata turtle, an
animal featured in one of our previous videos. What blew their minds is the fact that there are at least 5
species of the salamander.
However, humans might have already driven some of those species toward extinction. In their endemic
habitat of rocky mountain streams and lakes in China, the critically endangered salamanders are
threatened by poaching and human intervention.
Number 8. Giant George
Giant George was a blue Great Dane that is recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the
tallest dog ever. There were conflicts in media reports regarding his height, but the official
measurement of 43 inches showed that he was three-quarters of an inch taller than the previous record
holder, another great dane named Titan.
George was born on November 17, 2005, and he was owned by David Nasser since he was 7 weeks old.
At their home, he slept in a queen-sized bed, and one of his hobbies was to ride around his family’s
neighborhood in a golf cart.
While they were travelling to Chicago for his 2010 appearance on The Oprah Wifrey Show, yes, he was
invited to appear on the show, George was given a row of three airline seats to himself. Isn’t that
amazing? He even caused a commotion when other plane passengers started taking photos of and with
him, which was enough for the pilot to turn on the “Please fasten your seatbelt” sign for the rest of the
flight.
Unfortunately, George died on October 17, 2013
Number 7. The Goliath Frog
The aptly named Goliath frogs are the world’s largest frog species. They can grow to more than 13
inches long, excluding their legs, and weigh up to seven pounds. It doesn't start out so big, though. The
goliath frog tadpole is the same size as the tadpole of an average frog, but just keeps growing. The adult
looks a lot like other frogs as well, just a whole lot bigger.
Although these giant frogs have been around longer than humans, we still have a lot to learn about
them. However, we do know that they are considered a delicacy in some parts of the world. They live in
small ranges in the rain forests at the equator of western Africa, near swift-moving rivers and waterfalls.
